We are overwhelmed by the outpouring of support we’ve received from our community for Casper.
At this time, we’ve received enough to cover this initial estimate for his crate and training BUT we have a generous donor that has offered to match the next $1500 in donations! This would double the donations received to help with the current boarding costs while we wait for a training placement for him as well as help us continue to help dogs like Casper.

After surviving alone in the wilderness for over a month, Casper has overcome fear, illness, injuries and months in boarding. Now he has finally found a family that wants to love him forever, but severe separation anxiety is putting that future at risk.
With the right crate, training, and support, Casper can safely stay in the home he’s waited so long to find.

The Story of the “Grey Ghost of Split Oak”
For over a month, a frightened dog wandered through the Split Oak wilderness area alone. The community began calling him “The Grey Ghost of Split Oak.”
He appeared on trail cameras and disappeared just as quickly. Volunteers spent weeks resetting traps, hauling food and water into the woods, and monitoring cameras day and night in the hopes of finding him.
On December 4, 2025 the Grey Ghost, now known affectionately as Casper, was finally rescued. He was exhausted and in rough condition. He was covered in ticks. He had an eye infection, open bite wounds, and severe swelling from surviving in the wild.
But despite everything he had been through, Casper never stopped wanting connection.
Casper’s Journey From Survival to Safety
When Happy Trails was contacted about Casper, we were not in a position to take him on, but after hearing his story, we couldn’t say no to helping him when we saw how hard the volunteers had worked to help him.
And we are so happy we did! We learned to know Casper is to love him!
His goofy and sweet nature immediately began to show. We learned he loves car rides, treats and snuggles!
We also learned he was housebroken and even knew “sit”, “speak” and “shake”. It was obvious he was loved, before his fate landed him in the woods. And we wanted to help him feel that love and safety again.
Once his wounds had healed, the search for Casper’s forever home began as he waited patiently at a boarding facility.
Then in March, 2026 our pleas were answered by a loving, patient family that wanted to meet Casper.
And, just like everyone else who has met Casper, they fell in love and wanted to foster-to-adopt him! It was a joyous day for us all!
Casper is so close!
But, living in a home revealed something that living in a kennel or the wilderness never could: Casper has extreme separation anxiety. He is terrified of being abandoned again. After surviving alone in the wilderness and spending months in boarding, being left alone triggers intense panic for him. He desperately tries to escape confinement because he does not yet understand that he is finally safe. He destroys crates. He opens doors, not just interior doors, but exterior doors. He is a determined, powerful escape artist.
His foster-to-adopt family has not given up on him.
They love him deeply and still want to make him part of their family forever.
But keeping Casper safe requires specialized support:
- an escape-proof impact crate,
- professional training,
- structured crate conditioning,
- and behavioral support
Without these tools, Casper risks hurting himself, escaping confinement or worse, ending up loose and back on the streets alone again.
This is the final hurdle between Casper and the stable, loving home he has waited so long to find.
He survived the wilderness. He survived infection and injuries. He survived months in boarding. Now he just needs help learning that he is finally safe and home.
